What is an implant?

Titanium screws driven in the places of the teeth that are lost inside the mouth are called dental implants. Missing teeth are completed by placing dentures over these new screws. Dental implants have been the most preferred treatment method in recent years as they ensure that the missing dental cavities are filled without any treatment on the teeth around them.

Who is an eligible candidate?

Implants can be applied to patients of any age with good general health. Only for young people, it is necessary to wait until the age of 18 years when the bone growth and development are completed. Single dental implants are an ideal treatment method especially for young patients who have lost a tooth and do not wish to get their healthy teeth cut. It is possible to make fixed or retaining dentures with implant supports through the application of multiple dental implants for patients who have lost all or most of their teeth. This type of dentures affects the quality of life of the individual in quite a positive way by restoring the chewing functions, especially in elderly patients.

Stages of application

Initially, the presence of an adequate bone in the area planned for the implant treatment is evaluated through x-rays and tomography. In cases of adequate bone, dental implants are simple surgical procedures carried out under local anesthesia. In cases of insufficient bone, some bone augmentation procedures are required in addition to implant application. In this case, additional required materials and shape will be evaluated and explained to you by your doctor. Following the placement of dental implants inside the bone, a waiting period of 2-6 months is usually required to proceed with dentures. This may vary in implants placed in the aesthetic area, or in cases of multiple implants. At the end of the waiting period, the implants are opened from the top to take measurements for dentures.

Points to consider after the procedure

No discomfort is felt during the procedure as the implant is placed under local anesthesia. Following the procedure, some pain and swelling may occur, similar to a simple tooth extraction. In this process, the use of painkiller tablets for 1-2 days will relieve the discomfort. Keeping the implanted area quite clean and following the brushing and cleaning procedures recommended by your physician will accelerate the recovery period.
